| Musculoskeletal co-morbidity is one of the current problems facing global aging. The symptoms of combination of sarcopenia and osteoporosis is associated with negative outcomes such as falls, fractures, and impaired function, which not only affect the quality of life and independence of patients, but also increase the risks and social burdens faced by the elderly. In recent years, the benefits of gut flora to the body have received increasing attention. Its products, short-chain fatty acids, have several advantages, including anti-inflammatory maintenance of immune homeostasis and regulation of metabolism. In this paper, we review the progress of the application of short-chain fatty acids in sarcopenia and osteoporosis, and discuss the possible mechanisms of preventing sarcopenia as well as the targeted intervention pathways, so as to provide a reference for the prevention and treatment of the co-morbidity. |
